What Actually Needs Translating On a Cosmetic Label

Quick answer: The INCI ingredient list is a standardised naming system that stays the same across languages under EU and UK cosmetics regulation — it generally isn’t translated. The product name, function, usage instructions, warnings and marketing claims are what need translating, along with the Responsible Person’s address if it changes between markets.

  • Ingredient names on cosmetic labels use the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) system, a standardised format that stays the same across the UK, the EU and most international markets, regardless of the label’s language.
  • The product name, its function, how to use it and any warnings must be understood by the consumer in their own language — this is the content we focus our cosmetics translation work on.
  • Products sold in the UK need a UK-based Responsible Person under the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013, separate from any EU Responsible Person. We translate the documentation this role requires — we don’t provide the role itself.
  • The Product Information File for a UK-marketed product must be kept in English and accessible to enforcement authorities — if yours was prepared in another language, we can translate it into English.
  • If you’re unsure what needs translating on a specific label, send it to us before you commission artwork — we’ll tell you what applies, at no cost, before you place an order.
