Why Khmer?
Khmer, known in Khmer as ភាសាខ្មែរ, is the official language of Cambodia and belongs to the Austroasiatic language family. It is written in its own script, which developed from ancient Indian scripts, and it has no tones. Many everyday and formal words come from Pali and Sanskrit, so a translator needs to know both registers.

What Is Different About Khmer
When It Is Translated?
| Khmer feature | What it means | How we handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Khmer script | A script written left to right, with no spaces between words. | The translator reads the text in full, so small or faded writing is checked line by line. |
| Khmer numerals ០១២៣៤៥៦៧៨៩ | Dates, ID numbers and amounts may use Khmer digits instead of 0–9. | Converted to standard digits, then checked against the original one digit at a time. |
| Buddhist Era dates | Some documents show the Buddhist Era year, which runs 543 years ahead of the Gregorian year. | We give the date as written and add the Gregorian year, so UK readers can match it. |
| Names and spellings | Khmer names usually put the family name first, and there is no single English spelling. | Names follow your passport, so the order and spelling match your other UK papers. |
| Formal and everyday registers | Khmer uses different vocabulary for formal writing, everyday speech and respected figures. | The tone of letters and statements is kept, so a formal letter still reads as formal. |
| French in older records | Some older Cambodian records include French as well as Khmer. | We translate whichever language is on the page and flag any mixed text. |

|---|---|
| Typical range | Most Cambodian documents cost between £35 and £45 per page, and the quote states the exact amount. |
| Document type | A civil certificate is quicker than a court, medical or notarial paper. Tell us what you hold. |
| Length | Pricing follows the number of pages, so make sure the scan shows every page. |
| Legibility | Handwritten entries and faded stamps take longer to read. A sharp scan helps keep the price down. |
| Deadline | Many short documents are ready in one to two days, and a same-day rush may be possible for brief texts. |
| Extras | Notary and legalisation charges are separate. A posted paper copy can be added. |
| Interpreting | A Khmer interpreter is billed apart, at £35 to £45 per hour. Ask us when you get in touch. |

Why Book Our Khmer Translation
Services
Every translation is checked against the original. A second pass compares each name, date, number and stamp with your original before the certificate is signed.
- 01
Khmer Script and Dates Read Correctly
Khmer digits, Buddhist Era years and handwritten entries are read carefully and converted, and then each figure is checked against your original so a date or a number is never guessed.
- 02
Cambodian Civil Records Handled Properly
A birth certificate, a family book or a university diploma each has its own layout. Every entry, seal, legalisation stamp and handwritten line is rendered in English.
- 03
A Certificate Built to the Home Office Checklist
The signed statement lists the translator’s name, signature, date and contact information. If a court, university or employer has its own rules, tell us and we check them. Our certified work is accepted by UKVI, the Home Office, courts and universities.
- 04
Spoken Khmer Covered Too
Appointments need a voice as well as paperwork. DBS-checked Khmer interpreters are available, all of them NRPSI registered and Ministry of Justice approved, in person or by video or phone.

What Our Clients Say
We brought in this team for a two-day assignment. Our client needed an interpreter throughout, and they delivered without a single issue. Punctual, professional, and the interpreter handled some fairly technical legal discussion without missing a beat.
English is not my first language and the legal process here was quite confusing. The interpreter was patient, not just translating words but making sure I understood what was going on. The price was fair, no surprises at the end.
Excellent service! Very professional.
Very affordable and professional.
I had an excellent experience with IM translation services. They delivered fast, professional, and reliable service at a very reasonable rate. Communication was smooth, and everything was handled efficiently without any delays.

Khmer Translation Services: What to Expect
If you hold papers from Cambodia, we can help you use them in Britain. We work from East Ham, turning Khmer into English and English texts into Khmer. The whole job runs online: you send the file, and the signed translation returns to your inbox. Wider options are on our certified translation page, and our translation services homepage lists every service.
What is Khmer, and why does it need its own translator?
Khmer is the official language of Cambodia, written in its own script with no spaces between words. Documents may use Khmer digits, formal wording and handwritten entries. A general translator can misread these. That is why a Khmer translator reads each page in full, then checks every date and number.
What makes a Khmer translation certified?
The translator adds a signed declaration saying the English text is a complete and accurate version of the original, together with a date and a way to reach them. Without it, many UK bodies will not read a foreign-language paper at all.

Is Khmer the same as Cambodian?
Yes. Cambodian is another name for the Khmer language, and Khmer is also the name of the main ethnic group. Whichever word your paperwork uses, the translation work is the same. If you need someone to speak rather than write, see our Cambodian interpreter page.
How are Khmer names, numerals and dates translated?
Khmer names usually put the family name first, and English spellings vary, so we copy the form in your passport. Khmer digits are converted to standard numbers and checked one by one. If a date uses the Buddhist Era, we give it as written and add the Gregorian year.
Does a Cambodian document need legalisation?
That depends on who receives it. Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation legalises Cambodian documents for use abroad, so yours may carry its stamp. We translate the stamp like everything else. Ask the recipient whether they need legalisation, because a translation does not replace it.
Khmer translator or interpreter: which one?
Translators deal with writing, while interpreters speak aloud in clinics, courtrooms and meetings. Many clients use both, and we provide both. Our court interpreter and immigration interpreter pages explain more.
Can I order from anywhere in the UK?
Yes, from any city, town or village in the UK. Files travel electronically, so nothing about the process depends on where you live. Printed copies can be posted, and you may call at our East Ham office once an appointment is booked.
What affects the price of a Khmer translation?
Four things: document type, page count, legibility and deadline. The pricing section explains each, and the price you are given is the price you pay.
Khmer Translation Services —
Common Questions
Yes. We prepare certified Khmer translations for visa files, court bundles, university applications, NHS paperwork and employer checks. The translator signs a statement that the English is accurate, adds the date and gives their contact details. The price is agreed in writing before any work starts.
Expect to pay £35–£45 per page. Where you land in that range depends on the type of document, the page count, how readable the scan is and how soon you need it. We confirm one fixed figure in writing, usually within 30 minutes during opening hours, so nothing is added later.
Yes. Our certified translations are accepted by UKVI, the Home Office, courts and universities. Each one carries the translator’s signed statement of accuracy, the date, their full name and contact details, which matches GOV.UK guidance. If the recipient has extra rules, tell us and we check them before we start.
Most certificates and short documents take one to two working days. A same-day rush may be possible for brief texts that reach us early. Long contracts, court bundles and handwritten records need longer. Give us your deadline when you ask for a quote, and we tell you honestly what fits.
Yes. We translate birth, marriage and death certificates, the family book, ID cards, passports and driving licences. Every entry, stamp, seal and handwritten note is translated, and names are matched to your passport. Send a clear scan and we confirm the price.
That depends on who receives it, so ask them. A translation does not replace legalisation. Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation legalises Cambodian documents for use abroad, so yours may carry its stamp. If it does, we translate the stamp too, together with every seal on the page.
We follow your passport for names, because Khmer names have no single English spelling and usually put the family name first. Khmer digits are converted to standard numbers and checked one by one. If a date uses the Buddhist Era, we give it as written and add the Gregorian year.
Yes. Khmer is the official language of Cambodia, and Cambodian is another name for the same language. Khmer is also the name of the main ethnic group. Whether your paperwork says Khmer or Cambodian, our Khmer translation services cover it, and we translate into English or from English.
Yes. We translate transcripts, diplomas, degree certificates and school records. We keep your original grades rather than converting them. If a UK university or employer wants a comparison with UK qualifications, UK ENIC can issue a comparability statement. Send the full set of pages so nothing is missed.
Yes. Khmer interpreters attend in person or join by video or phone from anywhere. All interpreters are NRPSI registered and Ministry of Justice approved. The rate is £35–£45 per hour, confirmed in writing before you book. See our Cambodian interpreter page for appointments, courts and hospitals.
Yes. We translate letters, contracts, leaflets, websites and health information from English into Khmer for readers in Cambodia and in the UK. Tell us the audience and whether the tone should be formal or friendly, and the translator adapts the register. A certified English-to-Khmer version is available too.
Because official bodies want a signed human translation, not machine output. Free tools often struggle with Khmer script, which has no spaces between words, and they miss stamps and handwriting. A machine version has no translator’s statement, so UKVI, courts and universities may reject it.
